Life & Family Legacy
Thomas Joseph Walsh, M.D. — Physician, professor, soldier, author of A Journey Worth the Trip, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
The Bronx, Aunt May & Darien
Born on September 18, 1931 on University Avenue, The Bronx, New York to Thomas Joseph Walsh Sr. (1890–1965) (a WWI Argonne Forest veteran and NYPD Mounted officer) and Virginia Hughes Walsh (1901–c. 1937). After his mother’s early passing from tuberculosis, young Tom was lovingly cared for by Aunt May (Hughes) Stuart and later raised with loving stepmother Josephine Colly Walsh, settling on Salt Box Lane in Darien, CT in 1965.
Xavier & West Point to Bascom Palmer
Graduated as Cadet Officer and NYC debate champion from Xavier High School (1946–1950), attended West Point (1950–1952), earned his A.B. from Fordham College (1954) and M.D. from Bowman Gray / Wake Forest (1958), interned at St. Vincent’s in Greenwich Village, served as an Army Captain in Korea, and completed residency at Bowman Gray and fellowship at Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Knights of Malta & Community
Invested as a Knight of Malta in 1982 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral by Terence Cardinal Cooke, elected to Washington’s Cosmos Club (1979) as an Author of Science, and active for decades as Medical Officer for the Noroton Fire Department, member of the Darien Lions Club, Winged Foot Golf Club, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and the International Order of Characters.
A Life of Devotion, Science, and Service
On June 21, 1958, days after graduating from Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dr. Walsh married the love of his life, Sara Ann "Sally" Maust Walsh, at St. Catherine’s Church in Pelham, New York, celebrating their reception at Westchester Country Club and honeymooning at The Reefs in Bermuda. Across their 52-year marriage until Sally’s passing on December 10, 2010, she anchored their joyful home on Salt Box Lane and joined him across five continents.
Following his rotating internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village (1958–1959)—where he and Sally welcomed firstborn son Tommy in March 1959—Capt. Walsh deployed to Camp St. Barbara near the Korean Demilitarized Zone from August 1959 to September 1960. Reuniting in Tokyo at the end of his Korean tour, Tom and Sally traveled home westward for six weeks across Asia, India, and Europe before he completed active duty at Fort Totten and Fort Tilden in New York City in June 1961.
Settling in Darien in July 1965, Dr. Walsh balanced four overlapping callings: 33 years of ophthalmology practice in Stamford (1965–1998); over 50 years on the Yale School of Medicine faculty as Founding Chief of Neuro-Ophthalmology and Clinical Professor; 50 consecutive years as Consultant to the Surgeon General at Walter Reed Army Hospital (1966–2016); and authoring multi-edition international textbooks.
At home, life revolved around Tommy, Sara, Kelly, Meg, his grandchildren, loyal family Shelties named Boots, Max, and Clancy, rounds at Winged Foot, and legendary autumn stadium tailgates before Army, New York Giants, and New York Jets football games.
In His Own Words: Family & Sally
Reflections from A Journey Worth the Trip on why he wrote his memoir and his 52 years with Sally.
“Why did I write this book? If it were to tell you, the reader, all the wonderful things I think I did in my life, I could have put it all on a postage stamp. But I have decided to tell you about my wonderful family and all the people I have met who have made my life worth the trip.”
Opening reflection of his July 2017 memoir. — Thomas J. Walsh, M.D., A Journey Worth the Trip
Read in Prologue“I popped the question near Grant's Tomb on the Hudson River. Her answer was yes. Her father gave his OK, but said I needed to ask Sally's mother. I approached her while she was watering the flowers. She said yes. But then she said Sally had some flaws, but didn't say what they were. Her comment was a little troubling, but not informative as it all worked out for 52 years.”
On his June 1957 engagement to Sally Maust and their 52-year marriage. — Thomas J. Walsh, M.D., A Journey Worth the Trip
Read in Chapter 7: Medical School“Sally died in December 2010. She was a wonderful partner to go through life with. She knew how to manage me to do the right thing when I was doing something stupid. She also created a wonderful social life for all of us.”
